From the Coach

If you haven't ever read "How To Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie, put it on your list of things to do this winter. This book was written in 1936 and has since become an industry -- particularly for sales people. It's one of my favorite books full of "good sense" philosophy.

Here are some of the principles that might help you during the hectic holiday rush.

Prevent Fatigue and Worry and Keep Your Energy and Spirits

Rest before you get tired
Learn to relax at your work
If you run a household, protect your health and appearance by relaxing at home

Apply these four good working habits

1. Clear your desk of all papers except those relating to the immediate problem at hand.

2. Do things in the order of their importance

3. When you face a problem, solve it then and there if you have the facts necessary to make a decision

4. Learn to organize, deputize and supervise

Put enthusiasm into your work
Don't worry about insomnia

Little gems to get you through your day.

Best wishes,

The Coach

From the Front - The Job Front

While the Internet has changed the job search process and made it easier to access multiple job sites, it can also become cumbersome and confusing to track your progress. A client of mine has recommended a site that will customize your search -- www.jobsniper.com

This site will "Automate your job search." You can activate up to 5 custom Job Search Agents, and get jobs sent directly to your email account. You can also track and monitor your job search agents.

If you try this site and find it successful, let me know so I can pass the word to others.

Question of the Month - "Dear Interview Coach"

Q. I don't seem to be able to get past the first interview -- no call-backs. What am I doing wrong? How can I overcome this hurdle?

Giving up hope.

A. Never give up.

If you are getting interviews and no call-backs, begin to look at your interviewing technique. One of the best ways to interview is with a "consultant" mind-set.

Take the time to analyze what the company is seeking -- not just what is written in the ad or job description, but what it would take to get the job done, and done well! In an interview, listen for clues in the questions asked and the comments made. Let the interviewer know through your responses and your questions that you have an understanding of what it would take to do this job and can prove it through past experiences.

Skilled interviewers are using "Behavioral Interviewing" techniques to interview candidates. What this means is that they are listening for past behavior as an indicator of future success. If you did it somewhere else, you can do it for this company.

It is important for you to know what you can bring to a company and sell yourself accordingly. What have been your successes in the past? Can you tell stories about those successes? Prepare your stories so that you can demonstrate how your past experiences can transfer to new situations.

Best wishes on letting the employer know that you are the "best person for the job."

The Interview Coach

"My greatest point is my persistence. I never give up in a match. However down I am, I fight until the last ball. My list of matches shows that I have turned a great many so-called irretrievable defeats into victories."

-- Bjorn Borg, 20th c. Swedish tennis player

Success Story

Dear Carole:

I bought your book, Interview Fitness Training,  and at the third interview, I was hired into my new job with the U.S. Marine Corps, civilian investigator.

My most sincere appreciation for your tips on how to conduct myself during the interview as well as how to "interview" my prospective employer.

I did recommend your book to friends who, like me, were searching for decent jobs. I will continue recommending your book because it does work!

Fernando

Congratulations to Fernando -- best wishes in your new position!
