From the Coach
This
time of year can very hectic with lots of activities and places to be -- all at
the same time. If you are like me, you may find yourself running to get places
on time and some of the time not quite making it. I am going to recommend a book
that has made a tremendous difference in the way that I view time and
appointments. I have improved my punctuality by at least 75% after reading this
book.
"Never Be Late Again" by Diana
DeLonzor. This book contains Seven Cures for the Punctually Challenged.
It's an entertaining and practical book that delves into the root causes of
lateness and procrastination. It is full of tips for overcoming the
psychological obstacles that hold you back and there are 7 unique and simple
keys to managing time more effectively.
A must read for anyone struggling to meet
deadlines or appointments.

Interview Tip of the Month |
|
An
important life motto for me is: "It's never too late to make a change."
Sometimes it is difficult to hang in there when you have tried and failed.
Next time you feel like giving up think of some of these very famous
people who didn't give up after many failures.
- Thomas Edison patented 1,093 inventions in
his life time, but it took him 10,000 attempts to make an electric light
bulb work.
- Einstein failed an examination and
didn't qualify to study electrical engineering at the Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology.
- Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse series failed
to become an instant hit, but he kept trying and in 1928 he added sound
which made it an electrifying success.
- Milton Hershey failed several businesses
before he became the "Chocolate King" and built Hershey town. He even went
bankrupt in his first business venture.
- Fred Smith got a "C" in his management
class at Yale, but then went on creating an overnight package delivery
airline that grew into a worldwide phenomenon known as FedEx.
These are, perhaps, the most extreme
success-after-failure stories, but I can assure you that they wouldn't
happen if these people hadn't continued to pursue their dreams.

Anyone can give up -- that's easy -- its
picking yourself up after a failure that sets you apart.
Here's a fun instrument for you to take
Stock of your career interests.
There is no cost for the basic assessment.
Other than having some annoying ads and pop-ups it is a fairly accurate
assessment. It told me that my interest are in "Counseling and Guidance"
-- not bad for an online tool.

From
the Front - The Job Front |

Here
are the latest numbers as reported by the media. Whether or not you agree with
the numbers is another matter. "Fuzzy math" has a way of working its way into
statistics like these. Jobs added in the
U.S. over the last three months --
March --
353,000
April --
346,000
May --
248,000
(Source
SF Chronicle)-
There is more movement in the job market these
days and it is a start and definitely moving in the right direction. The
prediction for the future is that the job curve will remain fairly flat for some
months. Considering that 1.8 million jobs have been lost since 2001, we still
have a way to go.

Question of the Month: Dear Interview
Coach |
|
Q. I have been asked a very strange
question in some of my recent interviews, "What are you doing today?" What kind
of question is that and what are they expecting for an answer? A.
It's undoubtedly a strange question. Let's consider what the interviewer is
trying to find out about you. They could be trying to determine if you are a
planner - or a couch potato.
A good answer would be one that includes you
being productive with some planning. Basically, they are seeking information
about your energy level and your ability to plan ahead. Also, they want to see
if you are an organized person or a person who lets things happen and fall into
place. It's really a type of "personality preference" question.
A good answer would include action and energy –
if, this is your personality type.
"I am planning to spend three hours on Internet
research and job postings. Then, I will be making phone calls to network. I have
a luncheon appointment to meet with a former co-worker who is employed at a
company where I would like to work. I will also take time to tend to some
personal business. In the evening I will join a networking chat group - or -
attend a class on the latest software development - or go to a movie."
Get the idea? Productive and busy. You could also
add something about going to the gym or taking a run. The idea is to let the
interviewer know about you and how you live your life - a sense of a
well-balanced person - work/personal life/play.

Success Story |

Hi Carole,
I was at your presentation last month (I was the
guy who bought the last copy of your book, "Boost Your Interview IQ" at the end
of the night). Using your techniques of preparing stories, I just got a job I
interviewed for the week after I heard you speak. Especially useful was your
suggested response for "Why should we hire you." As it turned out, this job was
the confluence of my past experience, skills, and interests, and your
suggestions helped me tell that story. So, thank you!!!
