From the Front - The Job Front

The good news is that some people are beginning to get jobs. The bad news is that people continue to be laid off -- but it is slowing down. I look forward to the day when I can write and talk about how to negotiate higher salaries and turn down multiple job offers.

In the meantime, your biggest challenge is to stay positive. I know it is very difficult and I don't blame you for feeling down and discouraged, but don't let them win. Try keeping a journal of things to be grateful for. There are books written for this very purpose - gratitude journals. Be grateful for your health, the sun, the birds, having choice, small enjoyments -- really small -- like taking a long soak in the tub. Light a candle -- use some bubble bath. Spoil yourself -- every little bit counts.

Whatever you do, don't bring any negative vibes with you to the interview. Interviewers will spot it right away and you will be eliminated based on your low spirit. Interviewers are looking to see if you can do the job -- but they are also looking to see if you would fit in and be pleasant to work with -- low maintenance.

When you do your preparation and write out your examples and success stories, be sure they are positive and upbeat.

Eliminate the Negative when responding to the interviewer's questions.

Your examples should not be NEGATIVE or WHINING

Your examples should not BADMOUTH anybody

Your examples should not be longer than THREE MINUTES long

Your examples should not RAMBLE about irrelevant details

Your examples should not include INAPPROPRIATE language or SLANG

Your answers should not be about CONTROVERSIAL subjects.
Leave those for another time.

Preparation will make a huge difference

My workbook "Interview Fitness Training" will help get you focused and prepared. You have a lot of experience to relate in the interview -- which stories are relevant and important to the interviewer? Which details do you want to emphasize - which do you leave out? Preparing you experience in the form of "stories" will keep you on track and make your answers more interesting.

Success Story

Hi Carole:

I thought you would like to know I received a job offer just a short time ago from the law firm that I interviewed with yesterday! I guess perseverance pays off and so does networking as it proved itself once again!

I am thrilled about this news and thankful that I was able to speak to you on Saturday as well as find your website!

I hope everyone who is without work finds employment. It was a very, very long and frustrating time for me Carole, no joke, no kidding. Thank you and hats off to the 3 C's (Confident, Calm, and Cool). I applied them yesterday, and also found it very interesting that I was asked, "why don't you just start by telling me about yourself" -- I had reread that one from your site yesterday morning just to rehearse, and applied that 60 second rule!!!! Thanks very much for your guidance.

Sincerely yours,

Toni L. Mathias

Question of the Month - "Dear Interview Coach"

Q. Hi Carole: This is Malathy writing to you from the other part of the world -Dubai .

I have 8 years of experience as a customer service executive. Now the only problem I face is that whenever I appear for an interview , no matter how much I prepare , I loose my confidence. I am a hard working individual with excellent communication , interpersonal, and leadership skills. Would you please guide me in achieving what I need.

Hoping to hear from you soon

Thanks

malathy m raj

A. Hi Malathy: Nice to hear from another part of the world. I am in CA near San Francisco. The world is truly a small place, thanks to the internet.

"I have 8 years of experience as a customer service executive"

What is it that you fear? You have all that experience with customers. Begin to think of the situation as just one more customer with a problem. Do you know that you can solve their problem? Then let them know that. The most underutilized skill used in interviewing is "Listening" - listen to the questions they are asking - why are they asking about that? - What is their problem?

Look at their job description/posting/ad - what are they seeking? If they were your customer how could you give them what they need? Use what you know best - customer service - think of yourself as a pro with the answer to these people's dreams. This way of thinking will make you feel less nervous.

Remember, you have something to offer -- experience from past experiences. This is not a "Please, please, hire me" situation. It is a "Here's what I can do for you" situation. I am a hard working individual with excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills

These are skills any employer would want in an employee - let them know that you have those qualities and how this will help you perform the job.

You have what it takes -- you can do the job -- now, go out and sell those qualities to someone who is in need! Be the solution to the problem.

Best wishes to you.

A Funny Thing Happened in the Interview

I had a second interview with a manufacturer for a southeast regional sales manager. I had to travel 8 hours to North Carolina on Mothers Day for a Monday interview by car. It started at 7:30 am and for each hour afterwards I was interviewed by 8 different people. Some of the people did not even want to participate, management forced them. Before the interview, I spent about 8 days preparing myself including researching the company and trying to come up with every H.R. question imaginable.

I went to the interview confident because I felt prepared and was very experienced. On Tuesday and Wednesday they performed the same process with 2 other candidates.

To sum it up, I did not get the job and worse, the recruiter would not give me any worthwhile feedback. I am tempted to write them back and tell them how I really think, but it is probably a waste of time.

Do you have a job interview coming up...
 Are you ready?

 Are your interviewing skills rusty?

Do you feel excited?

Terrified?

In this economy, you'd better be able to answer every job interview question quickly, confidently and correctly or the competition will get the offer - what a waste!

As The Interview Coach, I make it my business to get people in shape to win the interview battle. I can guide you through the ins and outs of interviewing -- prepare you for those difficult situations, improve your confidence, and get those job offers you deserve!
